Major (Sequence), Minor, and Certificate Proposal Deadlines

2027-2028 Catalog Deadlines

  • Deadlines are when the proposal must be fully approved.
  • Review the required workflows for each proposal type.
  • If a proposal is not fully approved by the following deadlines, curriculum staff will adjust the starting effective date to the next catalog year.
  • Proposals for new majors and certificates (when there is not an existing major for the same content area) must be approved by the department, college, undergraduate/graduate curriculum committees, Academic Senate, Board of Trustees, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education. This process may take more than a year, please plan accordingly. If the proposal is not approved by all required committees etc., in time for it to be included in the catalog year for which it was proposed, it will be included in the next available catalog year.
    If a proposal is not fully approved by the following deadlines, the curriculum staff will adjust the starting effective date to the next catalog year. 
  • All proposals for new courses included in a new program, program revision, or minor edit proposal, must be fully approved before a program proposal can be submitted. 
New major or certificate (without a major in the same area) January 1, 2026 (deadline passed)
New sequence, minor, or certificate (with a major in same area) February 22, 2027
Revise major, sequence, minor or certificate March 8, 2027
Minor edit to major, sequence, minor or certificate March 31, 2027

 

Course Proposal Deadlines

Course Proposals Associated with a New/Revise Program Proposal

New course and course revision proposals that include changes to credit hours, associated with a new/revised program proposal, should be fully approved before the program proposal is submitted. Refer to program proposal deadlines above. 

New Course Proposals Not Associated with a New/Revise Program Proposal

New courses do not have specific deadlines and may be scheduled for an upcoming semester after they are approved, as long as the Registrar's scheduling staff has time to schedule the course and students have sufficient time to register. Refer to the Academic Calendar for registration dates.

Course Revision Proposals Not Associated with a New/Revise Program Proposal

The following deadlines are based on the deadlines for when course schedules must be submitted to the Registrar's Office and when students are able to view the course schedule information on the Course Finder website. Refer to the Academic Calendarfor student registration dates.

Schedule Due Dates:

  • Spring schedules due - July 1
  • Summer schedules due - September 20
  • Fall schedules due - November 1
